after reading posts on this forum, I believe I have water in my fuel.

I looked at the engine and I couldn't see any fuel filter or water seperator? Is this normal?

I have a Mercruiser Alpha 3.0.

Can someone give me reference of where they should be? Also, what is the best/safest way to drain fuel?

BoatMonkey

Looks like an oil filter from everything I've gathered.
Depending what year it is, you (Like myself) may not have one.

Mine will start , run, then crap out. I am thinking either my ballast resistor went (Unlikely as it's run fine for the past 5 years un til it sat), or I have water in my fuel.

SO if ya don't have one, I saw the mercruiser one at the marina for $35 plus the filter itself.....not sure but I think it has all the connectors to make it happen....

I have a '91. Can you just put them inline if you don't have one?

They look similar to an oil filter, they will be inline before the fuel pump. My boat is a 91 also and didn't have one, I bought one from bass pro for around $20. I bought replacement filters(WIX) at Napa. They are easy to install and a great benefit.
I used a little hand pump and pumped out all of my gas.

but if ya already have water in the carb then a carb dissasemble is about the only way to get it out. and remember to flush the fuel pump, the pump filter and lines between the water seperator your installing and the carb. there is also a filter in the carb inlet nut.

Re: Water in my fuel, where is the fuel filter?

Well guys here's my boats story...

Last weekend it just crapped out - and it was either the gas with water in it, or the distributor cap with grass growing in it (Not literally)....

Put a new distributor cap in, and 2 bottles of HEET and it ran crapy in my driveway ag ain.....for about 5 minutes, then all of the sudden VROOM, she cleared up and started purring like a kitten......so of course I went and topped the tank off with some FRESH gas.

But an inline is in my immediate future, like this weekend.................

I'm interested in the one with the ability to use WIX filters, can you post a brand name??

Thanks!

Scott Turchin, the filter I bought was from Bass Pro. The brand name was Sea Sense (I think). On the filter it listed other filter part numbers, the person at Napa crossed it over to a WIX, and that is what I bought. I am sure other brands will allow you to use different filters, kinda like using different brand of oil filters.
