I drained and refilled my lower unit for the winter. During the process Lots of water came out, and the gear lube looked really cloudy and "milky". Is there some sort of gaskett that Im going to need to replace?...and if so, what is the procedure Im going to have to follow? I have a 1979 100 hp Johnson outboard...I tried to look in the rest fo the forums to find this out but I could'nt seem to find it...Thanks a bunch :D

Re: Water in lower unit

You should repost this on the Johnson/Evinrude Troubles/Repair forum. In general there are several seals in the lower unit to keep the water out. I am not familar with J/E, but on a Mercury, there is the waterpump base Oring and gasket, waterpump base driveshaft seal, shiftshaft seal, propshaft seal and gaskets on the fill and drain plugs. Johnson probably has a similar list. On a Merc, all but the propshaft and shiftshaft seals are easy to replace, and have a high likelyhood of fixing the problem.
