I got home from work today and notice a little gear lube had run down from the top vent in the lower unit, so I drained the lower unit it was tilted up when I opened the lower fill screw as my son lower the engine i held the drain pan so I won't drip on the new driveway and I don't know if the water drained fron the prop but I got about 3 oz of crsystal clear water then what appeared to be normal looking gear lube it didn't look milky at all but the water baffled me. I got over 20 oz of fluid out and put it in a clear contaner to see if it would separte and it did not. What I found was the top seal on the screw was nearly gone it came out in pieces and the bottom was the same.....any clues? 1983 150HP Black Max

The most common cause of water in the gearcase is bad seals under the drain and vent plugs, Blu Lunch.

They should be replaced with every change of gearcase lube.

I poured the fluid in to a clear bottle and there was about a oz of clear water in the bottom after it separted. I ran the motor on the muffs Saturday after changing the water separtor filter and there was not any obvious leak then like today, may be thats why the water is clear as a bell....tap water? I'm going to change the o-rings tommorow and see what happens I'll drain it arfter taking for a ride in the lake......
