Water in Lower Unit :: Update ::

Hi everyone.
I performed the preasure test on my lower unit today. I found air leaking out around the shift rod. I am looking at an exploded diagram of the lower unit and there is an oil seal and an O-ring that is part of the shift rod assembly. Could this be what is causing oil to enter the lower unit? There doesn't appear to be any leakes anywhere else.
I also found a beat up exhaust gasket that I am going to replace.

Will I need any special tools to replace these seales?

1977 70hp mercury OB

Thanks For all the help!!
Jim

you can either take a knife, screwdriver, etc and carefully dig out the old seal and replace it, or you can do it the right way and get the special shift shaft bushing remover and just replace the bushing which has the seal in it and o ring attached. The tool costs about 20 bones from any merc dealer. Keep in mind the shaft may be pitted around the area of the seal and need replaced too.
