after replacing:manifolds&risers, heads&gaskets, water pump impeller took a test run and it shut off again all the cylinders were full of water and i also water in the intake under the carb. when i had it apart the block looked good, i saw no visible cracks, i checked all the mating surfaces with a straight edge, checked the intake for damage nothing. any suggestions where to look this time after i pull the engine???? see my last post for more info.

Do you have the exhaust flappers on the 280 drive? How about the bellows with the internal flappers? Sometimes when decelerating if the flappers are missing you can suck water into the engine.
That s a starting point.Jerry

the y-pipe exits below the engine through the transom, but the engine shut off underway when this occured. but to answer your question no flappers in the bellows and the lower bellows was relaced 3 years ago not by me so i don't know about theflapper. i would guess they all have them?

I don't think so. At least on the year 280 I have there is suposed to be a flapper on on the back of the drive where the exhaust exists. Mine has been missing for some time and as far as I know the previous owner never had a problem. I don't know if it makes a difference, but mine is on a 4 cylinder. However, I just replaced the bellows with one that has the flapper. No sense chancing it.

well i think i now know the importance of using marine head gaskets. the new FEL-PRO gaskets blew out between several of the cylinders, i will be buying the marine gaskets this weekend.

Sorry Bayliner, I cannot remember how all this started. Are the heads straight? Did they get hot and warp maybe at some point? The FelPro composites should be ok for this application, certainly should last for a season or two anyway even if they are "crummy".

If you have the intake manifold off now then I would do a simple and economical test on it....Seal up all of the intake and water passage ports on each side with duct tape or similar. Then pour water into the thermostat housing cavity, fill it up, then wait a bit, maybe an hour or two and see if it leaches into the intake plenum or the ports. That way you can be sure the intake is not corrupted on the inside between the water and air passages.

thanks Mac, i only took off the starboard head last night and i'll have the other head off tonight and i'm gonna straight edge the surfaces of the new heads and the block. i did test the intake last weekend after removing all the scaly rust that i could and found no leaks. i water tested the maniflods last night with a garden hose and they were good, no leaks. so i'll re-post when i get done all that, hopefully it won't be too hot down the dock tonight to work.
