After troubleshooting a particular problem for about a month, I have uncovered another. I have water leaking into my gear case.

It's a 1979 55HP envinrude. I have read the chapter on gearcases in my manual but I would also like to ask where the most common place water would be entering my gear case. I believe there are 2 seals behind the prop and 1 that sits next to the water pump. Anywhere I should be looking?

PS. For those that helped me out with the stalling problem, I'll let you know by end of week. I'm taking her out for the day.

JohnM,

By far, the most common places, in order, for water intrusion are:

1. The fill/drain screws. Few people replace the o'rings/gaskets when they service the L/U.

2. Prop shaft seals. Damaged by fishing line, etc.

3. Water pump/drive shaft seal.

The places it could be leaking..... There are a few spots... The propshaft seals might be worn. The driveshaft seals under waterpump or drain screws. Drain the lower unit and pressure test it if you have access to a tester that will tell you where it is comming from

As to the list above, I would add 1.5 shift shaft seal. This has one of those o-ring type seals, and they do leak often.
