I have a 1990 javlin bass boat I purchased this past fall, took it to the dealer the first week in april there was still ice on are lakes, to get it tuned up new water pump impeller. first time I used it was about 2 weeks ago, ran fair low speed a little rough. so last weekend I put it in the water it would not start, ran the battery down, pulled it out of the water took it home charged up the battery. hooked up my bridles to the lower unit, turned on the water still would not start, coughed a couple of times, but would not fire. this past monday took it back to the dealer, I know the owner through are sportsman club. told him the problem. he called me back about 4 hours later. said my 20 gal gas tank had a loy of water in it . called me up and I went down to pick up my boat he instaled a filter( canister type in the gas line to remove any water that gets in the gas tank. he says with ethnol gas he is finding this more often. Question is how did the water get in the tank ? I have never had a hose to it and it is always covered. I seen the 6 gallon clear plastic can he drained fuel into it it was 1/2 water, what a way to destroy an engine. any one else ever have this problem thanks ED.

For lack of a better term, ethanol does wick moisture from the air. If your fuel system is vented you will have to keep fuel fresh, not stored for long periods of time. All of that said, if he drained your 20 gallon tank and got out six gallons, I can't imagine 3 gallons of that being water. How long was this fuel in your boat? I never leave fuel in the tank in the off season.
