Water in Cylinders

I'm hoping someone can help me with some advice. I took my 1997 Maxum (5.7 Mercruiser) in for routine change of the Alpha One's water impeller, but the mechanic put the outdrive up wrong (water tube kinked--he admits his error) and the engine overheated on him when he test ran it. I don't know how hot the engine got (he claims "not too hot") but the next day when I went to start the engine two cylinders have water in them. We checked the manifold and riser gaskets and pressure tested them, and they are fine, so the mechanic took boat back to his shop and removed the head. He is still looking for the cause of the leak. <br /> I have three questions: 1) can an engine overheat so badly as to actually crack the engine block and cause water to leak into the cylinders, 2) if the problem is less serious (like a blown head or head gasket), is it reasonable to expect that the mechanic will replace cylinder heads (if so, all or just the ones that had water), and 3) since the engine was overheated, am I being reasonable if I ask the mechanic to also replace the outdrive impeller?

Just a guess (I work on cars for a living...not boats). It probably could heat enough to crack a block like that but it isn't likely. You probably popped a head gasket (maybe a cracked head). If it is just a head gasket they can mill the heads to remove any warpage. If it was a cracked head they would probably replace only the one (or, if dishonest, have it fixxed and tell you it was replaced). I do not think having the impeller replaced is being unreasonable.

You don't have a cracked block or blown head gasket. The guy who took it apart will till you that after he pulled the head. You can roast the engine a couple time befor you burn the head gasket out of it. What happend when you over heated the engine. Water was pulled in thru the exhaust. I call it AG or fm act of GOD or f*** majic. The engine when it gets that hot will pull water in to to cool its self down.(put water on a steel bench and put a heat sorce near the water, it will go to the heat). I seen this many times. I pull the spark plugs crank it over get the water out put fresh spark plugs change the riser gaskets. Install an impeller or find why it over heat it. Run it up listen for a skip and ship it. In most causes water injestion problems get miss diagnoised. You need to look for clues and use yor brain. I hear all the time blown head gasket its never the head gasket unless its been roasted a couple times. Gaskets today can take alot of heat. GM engines in cars run above 200 degrees. Nascar run there engines at 220. vinney
