Help I have a 1988 merc xr4 150 I'm getting a little water in the top left cylinder, not comming out around plug but when I remove plug it is milky white. I have checked compression on all and they seem fine 110-110-110-109-107 -111 I just replaced gaskets on water jacket covers and still getting the plug milky white, I see no cracks in cylinder. I have read on another post and it was a different size motor about a leak in a exhaust plate gasket is this something my motor has? when I did take the water jacket cover off I could see clean water droplets just inside exhaust side of cylinder. Any help would be great, Thanks, Bret.

Re: water in cylinder

This is V-6 six right, not an inline.

If so you don't have water jacket covers, but rather a single one piece cylinder head.

When you replaced the gasket could you see any sign of damage to the metal o-ring on the gasket cutout for the cylinder?

To answer your question...I am not sure if you have an exhaust plate gasket leak. I too have heard of this before but mostly on older inlines. However if the head gasket is brand new, I would think that a leak in the exhaust plate gasket is the only way water could get in. Perhaps someone else who know for sure will chime in.

Yes it is a v-6 No sign of any damage to metal o-ring I cleaned all edges and flat surfaces with emory cloth. When I changed the gaskets I had expected to see a place where the water had been leaking by but again no obvious sign. Should mention that this motor had set for almost 4 years in a garage before I bought it they had lost the lower unit and just parked it.

Re: water in cylinder

Could be a exhaust plate leak, or even a pinhole in the block casting.

Is your water pressure normal, or is it high? A plugged poppit can cause trouble.

Did you replace the lower unit with another, or rebuild the 4 inch lower that was on it?.

Hope it helps

Re: water in cylinder

Not sure how to check water pressure I did replace both thermostates, What is a poppit? I did order a repair manual last night hopefully that will help me learn a little more about this motor. I replaced the lower unit with another one they didn't even have the old one, I replaced the impeller and the housing.
