Hellow I am looking for hot spots to check or methods to find the outdrive leak.

I replaced my '86 alpha1 mercruiser outdrive on my '86 Wellcraft Nova 230XL with a refurbished one. Incidentally the motor is a 350MAG (5.7lt). At the end of the second season a small amount of water cameout of the outdrive. The repair costs estimate was nearly the refurbishment costs ($1500).

I used the high performance gear lube (it doesn't mix with water) and replaced the water pump. There is no fishing line on the prop shaft,no oil leaking in the bellows, the fill and vent plugs have gaskets. Also, I made sure the oil gasket between the upper and lower units was in place.

The only thing I can come up with is the water pump assembly. I only replaced the impeller and housing gasket. Suggestions please.

Well it Could be, the propshaft seal, or the shiftshaft seal, or the seal below the waterpump, or the seal above the waterpump, or the o-ring between the halfs OR it could be anyone of the Shafts.....
I'm paying $350. for a reseal job on a complete outdrive.....parts,+ labor..... $1500. seems abit out of line to me....

If it were me I would do a pressure and vacuum test to find the leak. Just apply pressure and use soap bubbles to find the leak. Sierra (NAPA) seal kits are around 35.00
1500.00 for a reseal is WAY out of line! You can buy a pressure/vacuum tester at almost any autoparts store or Sears and install your fitting from your lower unit gear oil pump and do the test.

Thanks to all that responded to my water in outdrive. I have a vacuum pump and have purchased a low pressure pump to try and find the leak. I will also get a couple of other repair quotes. Keep you posted.
