Hello. I'm getting water into the cylinders in a 15hp evinrude. I've replaced the head gasket already, but no luck. Water was only getting into one cylinder, but I think it gets into the other. The engine starts but doesnt stay running for long. It has been run in salt water. Model:E15RESR, SER:R08599995. Thanks.

welcome to iboats.....

water can also get in from defective powerhead base gasket. which cylinder is definitely getting water intrusion? do a compression check on the motor while you're at it and let us know what you get

Mike

sounds like a strong possibility, what I mentioned. get a second opinion though before you go tearing into it. I'm no expert, but typically when there's water leaking in, it's from head gasket or the powerhead base gasket, it's the gasket between the powerhead and the midsection/exhaust housing.

Is this a engine that you've had for some time, and this problem just popped up, or did you just obtain the engine and this is an existing problem?

If the engine had overheated bad at one time, there's a possibility that the cylinder head is warped or the sealing surface of the crankcase (block) is damaged. Check the compression and let us know what the readings are.

Water can gain access to the cylinders via the head gasket area, the exhaust baffle plate area, and as Mikey states, the powerhead base gasket area. It could also gain access via the bottom main bearing area but that's unlikely.

Keep us informed as to what you find.

Thanks so far guys. How do I check the compression? Is the mating surface of the head supposed to be perfectly flat? I placed a straight-edge over the head and it is not perfectly flat--it has a slight bow (i'd say less than 1/64).
I bought this engine used and it ran great but would have this problem occasionaly of running on one cylinder until it always did it (due to water intrusion).

Seems like you found the problem. Take the head to a machine shop, get a new head gasket, torque it properly and you should be back on the water.

If a machine shop isn't handy, you might try something I've done a few times.

You'll need a flat level surface.... a thick piece of glass on a bench will do nicely, or whatever you have that you're sure is perfectly flat and level.

Lay a sheet of 220 wet or dry sandpaper on that surface. Spray mineral spirits on the sandpaper. Lay the head on that sandpaper and move it in a figure 8 pattern. If the warp isn't too bad, that procedure will cure it. When you're satisfied the head is okay, follow thru with a finer grit sandpaper (400) if needed.
