howdy,
well i took out the starter pushbutton and unwrapped(?) the wires leading to it, wd40, exercised it a bunch and viola! it starts everytime!
now...i haven't taken it out or let it run very long, but i don't see water flowing out of the little black hole on the side/bottom where i think it is supposed to...it drips a little and when reving the motor- very little! the intakes on the lower part send out a bunch of bubbles and i get a drip, drip, drip from the hole. is it supposed to warm up? i keep checking by feel and it nver got to hot to easily hold your hand on various parts of the motor (cyclinder heads?). am i supposed to put it in gear and actually move it or should it 'flow' in neutral when you crank it up? i wrigggled a piece of wire in the intake holes and in the little black output hole, there is exhaust and maybe a little 'spray' from the 2 holes directly in the back of the below the motor area. i believe it is a 9.9 mag flash cd, sailmaster, i hung upside down over the transom and i think these are some sn/modelish type # i found- 10se478m e5600113? what else do we need to know to tell me something good?

That little black hole is called a tell-tale. I would take the cover off and locate the inside of the tell-tale, take the black rubber hose off of it, then trace it back to where it connects to the engine and take it off from there. Now try blowing through it hard or hook it to compressed air if you have it, there could be something stuck in it, it happens to me every now and then. Good Luck.

Hi,

I'd guess the impeller is shot. It's the rubber bit that actually pumps water. They're a normal wear item (should be changed every now and then), and they also tend to dry out and get hard/brittle just from sitting.

I'm sure someone's told you to buy a service manual for your motor.. It's good advice. I've also found this article very helpful. I've seen that the author of it posts on this forum.

Take care & good luck.

Brent

9.9/15 maintenance article

Oh, forgot to mention. You should get a stream of water out of the tell-tale at idle. My 15 hp was just dripping at idle, and would have a weak stream if I bumped the rev's up a bit. Replacing impeller ($10 + 1/2 hour of my time) solved the problem.

Brent

ok-
thanks for the replys so far...
i will make the trek back to the boat friday and try to see about the clogged tube...
if i have to do this impeller/pump thing- can i do it while the motor is still hooked to the boat? the former/current partners have cabled the motor on the boat and when it is vertical- it is in the water, when it is tilted- it is out - only two options...
while i am responding- how do i flush the motor when it is in the water? put muffs on and turn on hose, then lower and start the motor?...
also, the lower gear oil- how can i change that with the motor tilted up or when the propellor part is in the water?...
seems like a strange setup for maintenance to me...
any suggestions? will try to find the thermostat and take tube off friday and have a manual from the library- it does not seem to allow for this sailboat in saltwater setup services???
if i have to cut the cable- i have found someone who says they will do a 'complete' tuneup/ck out and replace pump/impellor for $150...is that a resonable sum in case we have to keep things like they are= no maintenance possible almost..i think?
lots here, will check back frequently today for good answers, thanks so far...
mike

If it were me, I would figure out how to get the motor off the boat, do all the maintenance that needs to be done, then put it back on. It must come off (it went on!), it just might be a pain to do. But trying to work on a motor hangin' on the back of a boat that's in water just seems like a really bad idea to me. Dropping the lower unit in the drink or losing bolts/nuts etc. would be much more of a pain than removing motor. Oh, and I know of no way of changing the lower unit oil that doesn't involve the lower unit being 1) straight up and down (i.e. not tilted, so you know the level is right when oil comes out of the top vent hole) and 2) out of the water.

that's my $.02.

Brent

ok...
i went and tried to find both ends of the 'pee hole' tube- can find the one where it leaves the motor- the other end is buried under a lot of stuff...
i bought some universal muffs- tried them and
a-i don't see how they work very well-not a tight fit
b- i put hem on anyway and lowered the motor back in the water with the fresh water turned on-
c- couldn't tell any difference- no water coming out of anything except a slight drip from 'pee hole' and the spary from the 2 exhaust ports on the back
motor still starts every time- i kept checking in case it needs to warm up and it did- as soon as it got uncomfortable to the touch, i turned it off

called the other partner and let them know i was
a- stumped
b- can not work on the motor when cabled to boat
c- if it was my decision alone-
i would cut the cable- bring it home- do a complete service (or as complete as i can mange with this library manual)consisting of new plugs/gearoils/probably remove the lower end of it and put in a water pump and impeller/clean it up and figure out how to flush it out!

now pretty well stuck and frustrated- maybe we can cut it off and take it to a repair place and have it squared away...

any thoughts?

thanks for responses so far...
mike
