Guys and gals?

I recently installed a shaft extension kit on my 61 Evinrude 75HP/. I have run it for as long as 10 seconds at slightly above idle and have yet to see any water at the rear discharge of the engine. Am I impatient or did I get a water tube misaligned or something? How do I check the operation? Thanks!

Probably has a thermostat that won't open for a minute or two after start up. Start it up with cover off and keep an eye for water and occasionally touch the cylinder heads. If it gets hot enough to not be able to touch it momentarily any longer, then lets troubleshoot it. On those older motors the exhaust sound will change as the water starts flowing.

Re: water flow from a 1961 Evinrude 75HP ???

Hello, I have the exact same motor on my 1960 Thompson. It's a Starflite III with the Unicharger system model # 50927. And, I'm concerned about the water flow, too. When I turn it on it does goes through a warming up period. Then some water eventually begins to spit out. I know the water line is correct and I just installed a brand new impeller, but I thought it should be a steady stream of water. It's not overheating, but it just doesn't seem to be enough water to me. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thank you in advance,

Craig Wallace

You have to run it long enough for the thermostat to open, could take a few minutes. The water flow should increase when the thermostat opens.

Those motors have a thermostat controlled recirculating cooling system. When the 'stat is closed, the water returns to the pump for recirculation till it gets warm enough to open the 'stat. Then it is discharged and replaced with cool lake water. The thermostat is constantly sampling the water temp and opening and/or closing as neccessary to maintain the proper temperature. So it is not a simple matter of being open or closed.

However, there should always be some water blowing out the hole in the back. The amount blowing out depends on the state of the thermostat at the moment. It is never a steady stream like a hose. All you are seeing is a sample anyway--most of it goes out underwater.

Thanks Daviet & FR,

Okay, so it sounds like it would be normal that the discharge I'm seeing just looks like a heavy mist, right?

Thanks again and have a great weekend,

Craig
