I have a 1999 Mercury 9.9hp 2-stroke. I bought it new and have run about 15 gallons of gas through it. The starts & runs fine but I have noticed an intermittent stream of water coming out of the back of the motor. At varying speeds it will have a strong stream for a couple seconds and then a weak to no stream for a couple seconds. Then the cycle starts over. I purchased an extended warranty which does not cover thermostat or impeller.
I talked to the people I boat the motor from & they said don't worry should be fine. They said impeller life is very long on that particular motor.
I am not convinced they are correct. Any advice would be great.
PS I read this site often & enjoy everyone's input......

Nope, there's a problem. Stream should start a few seconds after it's started and be there... always. Either the impeller's bad, there's a resriction some where, or the the pee hole is clogged. I once removed an outdrive on a Johnson, only to find the hole was clogged, check that first. Your model has a super duper impeller, huh? They all last the same...

I think that engine's overboard water stream is thermastaticly controlled , so you may not have a problem at all.Trace the hose from the fitting to the head and it should go to a cover with to screws bolting it to the head .htats where t t-stat is .

Thanks for the info so far --- Yes it does have a thermostat. Again the stream is on then off then on. I can vary the speed and it seems to be better at high speeds but still on then off. It is a strong stream when it is on.

Is it possible for something to be floating around in the thermostat housing that blocks the water flow intermittently?

Yes it's possible but I don't think you have a problem at all , on those engines with the overboard hose going to the t-stat housing the water flow is inconsistant and is normal.Don't forget thats only some of the water coming out there the rest comes out through the prop. I don't like that system but I guess it works on them mercs.
