i have a 1960 merc 400 and had no water coming from from hole in side of engine, so i ordered a impeller and removed my lower unit. I connected my hose to the copper pipe coming down from the engine and turned the water on hoping it would come out the the hole on the side. instead i what i see pouring out from what it looks like the top of that pipe. what do i need to check out now?

Well, water does have to come out of the engine.--So that is likely normal.---Tell tale is likely plugged.-----Was the engine in fact ruuning hot ?----What was the condition of the old impeller ?

The impeller was not in the best shape but not terrable. Ran the boat one time since I bought it for about 20 min and didn't seem like it was running hot, it just worried me cause nothing was coming out of the tell tale.
