water coming out of motor

Have two almost identical 1980 Johnson 9.9 motors. One is a Sailmaster, the other a short shaft. Replaced the waterpump on the Sailmaster. Inspected but have not replaced the water pump on the other motor.
There are two holes on the upper part of the drive unit
(Not the dropable part of the lower unit)
The Sailmaster, with the new water pump, shoots plenty of water out of the "Telltale" hole. It also has water coming out of the two holes on the upper part of the drive unit. Is this normal at this location? I seem to recall from other old small outboards that this is the standard residue from the cooling system, however, I would think that it would go out though the lower exhaust.

The other motor passes no water out of either the telltale hole or the two holes in back. I assume that this means that no water is being pumped into engine?

Re: water coming out of motor

Ron.... That is a normal happening, no need to be concerned. Those two holes are exhaust relief holes.... without them the exhaust would back up and kill the engine. There is another tube within that housing and water fills the cavity between the two whose purpose is to cool the outer housingx, otherwise paint would be short lived in that area.

The water, after reaching a certain level spills out those two holes, blown out of course by the exhaust pressure.

Re: the other motor that wasn't shooting out water: Replaced the water pump and now water really pumps out.
