Water around the Plugs

After firing a 10 year dormant '74 Merc 500 I'm getting water collecting beneath the spark plugs that is pooling in the cylinder cover circles that surround the plugs.

I'm guessing that the cylinder cover gasket is shot. Can this gasket be replaced without pulling the powerhead? My manual goes thru the process, but it is based on pulling the PH and doing a complete engine overhaul.

just pull the cylinder head and split off the water jacket cover...replace both gaskets and reinstall head

I did my 76 115hp last month, replacing the water jacket cover. Be very careful removing the bolts, most of mine broke off. You could also just take some permatex or windshield sealer and put it around the plugs to seal it.
