Neighbor is out of the area on business and his wife called around six last night asking me to come help, their mare was going into labor early. The admiral and I went over and she was right, this one was coming earlier than expected. (Should have been mid-April) Got her in the barn and comfortable called the vet to see if he thought he needed to come out and he said not unless the mare had problems and gave us his cell number just in case. Colt dropped a bit after 10 last night and he and mom are doing great and the new colt took to the teat with no problems.
This was the first time the admiral watched a mare give birth and the colt gain his legs in a matter of minutes and go to the teat and she was in a word, amazed. Thing is, I've seen (assisted) lots of times and know what? She is right, it's still amazing to watch and be a part of. I was going back over this morning just to check them and there was no way the admiral was going to stay home and went with. She and the neighbor woman must have talked for 20 minutes on what to name him while I took the time to check him completely, all is good on that front but I suspect the admiral has formed a bond with the colt that's going to last awhile because on the way back home she said, "We have plenty of room to put up a stable...." Uh oh!!!
