yeah I'm gonna have to see it "virtually" too :-(

Last week I was making my plan on where to go, I have my telescope, camera, solar filter, and laptop all ready to go but it's cloudy and it doesn't look like I will get to see it.

Re: Watch the heavens on the 5th.

At about 5:45 EST last night the skies cleared enough that the sun was shining. So I waited 5 minutes and when it was still sunny I decided to go out and set up the scope.

I have it in a small "observatory" so I open the observatory, put on the solar filter and an eyepiece and look at the sun. Nice, I can see sun spots but still no Venus. So I hook up the camera and as I am trying to focus the camera the screen goes dark....sun is covered in clouds  . So I wait 15 minutes and now it looks like its going to rain! So I pack it all up and put it all away and went in to watch it on TV  .

I said to the Admiral..."see, this is what I get for being pessimistic"

Venus Transit 2012 - next time it happens will be 2117 and I don't think we'll be around.

Got the kids an Orion XT8 telescope with all kinds of filters and eye pieces for their birthday and thought it came with a sun filter but it didn't and we forgot about it until yesterday! We have seen some amazing images through this thing.

Re: Watch the heavens on the 5th.

I ended up going to the bar/bike night. The sun poked thru the clouds between showers, and we joked about looking directly at the sun and not seeing spots until we looked away.

Had it been nicer out, I would have rode home, grabbed my welding helmet out of the truck, and glanced skyward.

Oh well, Im sure its on youtube....
