Wasp Hornet Warning

Just had the boat out Saturday before last. Found the beginings of a red wasp (the blackish red ones) nest hanging at the transom rub rail when removing the cover.

This last Saturday, one week later, those big bright red wasps were under the cover busy building another one.

There are a ton of unsuspecting places where these guys can build one. It would be too bad to well underway when an unseen nest is disturbed.

Anyone know of a way to keep 'um out to flush 'em before starting out?

Well, I know what I use to kill em good at the nest.

WD40, liberally applied...then RUN

Not sure if you want to spray that around your rub rail though. Not really environmentally friendly......

I've thought of covering mine up and "fogging" with a bug spray..I did spray my hull with ant spray..big red ants everywhere when I brought her home..Also have to shoo a pesky wasp out from under the bow every weekend when I am out working on her..They really like those sheltered out of the way areas..

There was a guy selling a 25 foor luhrs sportfisher for 2,500 bucks in my area, beautiful boat...except the ad stated BEE HIVE IN CABIN...oh no!

Re: Wasp Hornet Warning

We have the same problem here in south Louisiana. I use my boat enough that I don't tend to get wasps nests constantly, but I do get them occassionally.

What I do to check for the presence of wasps is to bang on the side of my boat with my fist periodically. I do this in several places to be sure that I will disturb any wasps that might have built a nest anywhere in the boat. If I see wasps come flying out, I get out of the way and let them settle - as soon as they do, I spray the affected area with wasp killer.

I find that the worst situation for wasps is when a boat sits for long periods of time between uses. That provides a place for them to build the nest without being disturbed, while frequent use tends to discourage the wasps to the point where they may not even finish a nest before leaving. This being the case, a little proactive response by hunting for them tends to eliminate problems.

You can also just spray some wasp killer spray/foam on the boat cover edges and around the fiberglass where they would enter. The scent/chemicals seem to dissuade the wasps from wanting to enter the area.

I was under the impression that WD40 was not a petroleum derivative. In fact I thought it was fish oil based.

I dunno....maybe it's not so bad. This is from their faq

What does WD-40 contain?

While the ingredients in WD-40 are secret, we can tell you what WD-40 does NOT contain. WD-40 does not contain silicone, kerosene, water, wax, graphite, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), or any known cancer-causing agents.

I was also told that you can remove wasp nests by hand after dark since they won't sting at night. I have no idea if that's true and pretty sure that I can't consume enough alcohol in one setting to give it a try!

I had this same problem...I found that with the boat cover on, you can get one of those mosquito foggers (the kind that runs on butane and emits smoke) and smoke under the cover. It will kill some, but the others will fly away as they don't like the smoke. It works for me.
