My washing machine started leaking. I found this to be the leaky spot.

Can anyone tell me what this is? There is a plastic part that goes into the plastic cage, but I can't tell what it does. 30 year old maytag, just getting broken in right? Or just broken.

Any help is appreciated.

Ayuh,... I believe that's an anti-siphon/ vacuum breaker...

At 30 years old, you might wanta consider Up-grading....

Yes, that could be a one way check valve.

Ya, I think you guys are right. Took it apart, cleaned it up, still leaks. Nothing looks broken...

So, its been bypassed.

I guess I'll be repowering soon.:)

Where your hose goes into the drain make sure it's a loose fit cause with the anti siphon bypassed there will be trouble keeping the tub filled unless there's an air gap somewhere.

Try this outfit. Maybe you can get a new one and get a few more years outta the old gal.

I really hate disposing of equipment when it has a lot of life left and can be repaired (by the handy) for a fraction of new.

That is not the anti siphon valve for the drain, that is the anti siphon for the fill.

Backflow preventer? All I know about washing machines is that they sure do seem to last a long time, ours has been through 3 kids and going on 30 yrs.
Had a bad pump shaft seal and had to replace the little plastic impeller housing.
I thought I would get creative and hide the drain that comes over the sink tub, I plumbed it directy to the drain, she went to wash clothes and said it wasn't getting water, actually the water was siphoning right down the drain and I learned that lesson.

I have owned a couple Laundromats before and I had one that had very low standpipes because they were designed for a very old type washing machine. pretty much most top loaders and most front loader can't tolerate a direct connect to a drain and the exit of the discharge tube needs to be higher than the tub height.

The vacuum break in the picture is for the water fill. In the unlikely event that water pressure drops and the washing machine inlet just happens to be submerged, it prevents dirty water from being sucked back into the water system.

Your picture looks just like the anti-siphon for the fill line I had to replace on my Maytag. Fairly cheap as I remember.

Something like a bladder inside if I remember that developed the leak.
