Hello all, purchased 1997 Yamaha 115. Above 4000 rpm warning buzzer sounds and power is reduced as it should with warning. Problem is consistant any time motor is operated above 4000 rpm for about 30 seconds.
I figure it is overheating and have read posts on checking popit valve. I don't have a manual yet. Can someone tell me where it's located. If anybody has other ideas please let me know. No oil injection on this motor so not an oil warning.
Thanks Dave

Should find th epopet valve in the back of the engine bottom. Hose 3/4" hose attached.

Could also be thermostat not opening or opening fully. If it is a saltwater motor, the head, cooling passages, and midsection could be coated or restricted. Be sure the poppet is free to move from the grommet. They will often swell and restrict movement. Has the impeller been changed recently?

Really sounds like you need to start at the water pump and go through to the thermostats to find problem. A blockage or restriction any where in the system can cause the problem. Last resort if not cured will be to pull the heads and check them.

Hi

I had similar problem with my 130hp (the same block). I replaced both thermostats with gaskets. But that wasnot the problem. My water jacket gasket had torn/perished and had to be replaced. They are located between engine head and outer side.

Before you do this check your water impellar!!!

Best of luck.

I had the same problem with 1998 200 2 cycle.

Did all the above...

Problem was restriction in fuel overflow which starved the engine at high RPM.

Hope this helps.
