I bought a pontoon boat with a 1994 mercury mariner. All of the wiring was cut and on the floor. I bought a six wire ignition, after market. that is suposed to be merucury. The wires matched to old ignition: red, black, black yellow stripe, yellow red, yellow black, purple. The alarm was connected to the purple ignition wire so I connected it the same. there are leads going to a gauge. I started without connecting to the gauge then I connected to the gauge. The alarm beeps when I turn on the key and does not stop. I dont know what I am doing. Can someone guide me how to wire it correctly?
Thanks You!!!!!

I don't know your motor, so this is just info

For the alarm to sound it needs 12V (purple) on one side and ground on the other. The ground side goes to a sensor which will ground when (for example) the motor overheats.

The alarm should have 12V applied when key is ON which sounds like it is. The alarm should not go to the gauge. The gauge will have 3 connections, 12V (purple), Ground (Black) and sensor (Tan). The gauge sensor will not be the same as the overheat switch but may look similar.

Look at head and thermostat housing to see if you can find 1 or 2 sensors

Look on the cylinder head of the motor for a brown or tan wire. That is the overheat alarm. A lot of motors do not have a sender for a gauge, just a simple overheat sensor.

I assume you have a separate buzzer? One side should be connected to purple, the other side should be connected to that brown or tan wire. If it is not contained in the harness, you will need to add one. If the motor overheats, the brown or tan wire is grounded at the cylinder head and competes the buzzer circuit.

BTW Grey is tach sender wire.

A '94 Mariner would usually have oil injection. There are low and no oil alarms associated with that system. There is a "Lube alert" component which is supposed to control and differentiate those different alarms. It will have 5 wires and a ground. See if the oil injection is still connected and wired properly. A lot were disconnected.
