Hi

I was cleaning the boat today, and had the key in the 'on' position so I could listen to the Red Wings on the radio. I was out there for about an hour or so and noticed that the ignition coil was warm (I did not start the boat while I was out there).

Is this something that is normal?

The engine is a 1994 Ford 5.0L OMC 2-bbl carb.

thanks

Yes it normal, but it's not a good idea to have your accessories hooked up like that.
Your accessories should come off a seperater circuit, completely seperate of the ignition switch.

Re: warm coil??

Thank for the reply.

The previous owner had the stereo hooked up so that you could turn the stereo on whenever you wanted. I didn't like the idea of leaving the stereo on by accident and running down the battery, so I hooked the power lead up to the ignition switch. Now the stereo only comes on when you have the key on. Seems to work OK, I'm curious why you say its not a good idea?

It can burn up coils and the ignition module in the distributor. Other than that, no reason.
