I've got my 1996 Bayliner Capri 1700 with Force 120 HP outboard and I'm looking to take it to Catalina this summer, if possible.

I bold and italicize "if possible" because it may be something I don't even consider altogether, if it is too dangerous.

What I've got:
-17' Bayliner Capri open bow with Force 120 HP outboard
-21 gallon gas tank
-Bow cover & window-connecting bimini top
-Shooting flares, flag, air horn, whistles, fire extinguisher.
-Flashlights, glowsticks, compass, small toolbox.
-First aid kit
-Extra water/food

What I know (think I know) I need:
-Vessel Assist/Sea Tow (REALLY wish to go without it, but I suppose its an investment worth making. [I am expensive, you know])
-Fixed mount VHF radio. May also consider handheld too, but I give priority to the fixed-mount due to its range.
-Spare gas tanks. (how many extra gallons would you recommend bringing? Besides the obvious answer of, "no such thing as too much")
-Back-up battery
-Back-up hand-operated bilge pump
-Maps of Catalina & Long Beach.
-Tarp for emergency shelter
-Experienced buddy boat.

Is there anything else you guys would recommend preparing?

Thank you for your time and advice!

After further review, I'll be getting a handheld VHF/GPS for a ditchbag.

Another two things you'll need with a boat of that size and configuration: Perfect weater and perfect sea conditions. One good wave over te bow and you are in deep trouble.

I agree.. Thank you.

Besides trying to get the boat as capable as possible, weather is the ultimate factor.
