Want to add visual alarm to Yamaha engine

Yamaha 03 f225, audible engine alarm is not loud enough to hear when engine is running hard, I want to add an alarm that you can see, ( like idiot lights). Can I tap into audible alarm wires and add visual alarm to that? I was thinking about using license plate bolt strobe light as visual alarm. Could this work?

If the Yamahoochie hi temp alarm works like the Mercury and OMC, (hi temp switch closes and goes to ground) I don' see why not. I've thought about it myself, just never did anything about it. Get back and let us know what you come up with.<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

hello<br /> the F225 has a funny alarm system and a specific way to test the sensors and switch's. it has a thermo switch and a thermo sensor.the alarm should trigger at 248 degrees F.the sensor must not be shorted to ground but through a 2kOhm resistor the switch can be shorted to ground.<br /> the oil pressue is a computer map that looks at oil pressure versus RPM and gives false alarms in heavy seas. to test the low oil pressue short the pink and black oil sensor leads through a 220 ohm resistor. best thing is to scap the cheapie pre-rig trash gauges and buy the correct yamaha multi function gauges and make sure you have a yamaha keyswitch not a marine works omc clone switch with an adaptor harness. some of the pre rig boats I see are junk rigs. wire harness's will fail in less than 2 years and some are secured to the inner deck before the top deck is installed making it impossible to service. on the F225, all the alarms are routed through the ECU. be careful playing with them. so far the ECU and sensors have proven very reliable the biggest problem being the low pressure pumps. oh one more tip. the motor must be running for the alarm system to work properly so all tests must be made with engine runing. like I say. buy the correct stuff not the cheapie pre-rig stuff.<br /> good luck and keep posting

rodbolt you sound like you know what you'r talking about but i have no clue. i bought a strobe light kit from autozone (for the rice burnin street rods). it has a very small strobe that is waterproof, and a transformer. it has a + and - lead into transformer. i have a yam ign. switch the buzzer has 2 wires one pink & one yellow. i want to tie into the existing wires so they go off at the same time. can this be done?

some 1/4" clear rubber tubing tied in @ the tattle tale port on the engine will give you a visual on water pump action if you run it up to a point so that it can be seen while underway - it's not hi-tech but it will let you know if your suction is plugging with weeds or in the mud

puddlepirate<br /> as the computer on that engine drives the alarm circuit I am not going to say yes or no. I cant say how much of a load the computer will carry .<br /> if I were you and I needed a visual I would add a hot horn kit or move the horn to a better location so it could be heard. try writing an email to tech services for yammi.<br /> good luck and post back I will try to find more today

rodbolt<br /> this strobe draws less than 3 amps. and would not run for more then a couple of seconds at any one time.would this horn you mentioned draw less? where can i get one? it's not practicle to move existing buzzer as my console is fully enclosed. i have access to interior of console but door folds down in front of leaning post (cant run this way)

we use the small sounder from truck/bus reverse warning systems here in the UK for any warning device that uses tiny amounts of current.<br /><br />They cost about $6 and fit in any electrical line<br /><br />They are water proof and ******g loud

I don't know anything specific to the yamaha's, but on my Johnson, the temp warning horn was too quiet as well.. so I did what anyone would do in that situation.. I replaced the mini horn with a $8.00 relay, and use the relay to power a full size car horn in the dashboard..<br /><br />You can't miss this thing when it goes off. its deafining in the cockpit and drowns out my old Johnson 100HP completely.. best of all, because of the relay, the power drawn through the OB harness is less then it was with the mini horn..<br /><br />I also took the liberty to hook it up to a dash light.. just in case the horn fails for some reason. Since I'm using a relay, I could use any 12 volt light I wanted since the power is not drawn from the outboards harness at all, only the relays lightweight coil is run from the harness..<br /><br />Its been great for me, as an added bonus, I put a horn switch on the dash and now I can get the attention of PWC users so they can see me give them the finger for speeding in the no wake zones.<br /><br /><br />regards<br /><br />Franki

thanks guy's for all you'r suggestions their really good, but I guess my real question now is! There are 2 wires to my buzzer 1 pink w/red bands 1 yellow w/red bands are these POS. & NEG.???? If they are i know how to wire my visual alarm in.
