Recently, after and extensive boat rebuild, I finally got my boat finished and headed out for a trial run. No issues backing out of the ramp. There was a lott of traffic that day at the ramp so I backed her out pretty far before deciding to turn around....boy did I get a surprize. As I turned the wheel, the boat seems to be going the wrong way backwards. There
was a pretty strong current and wind so at first I thought wow, Better just put her in forward and turn around that way. I had issues with reverse stayin in gear at anything other than idle. TO my surprize, when I went to turn around, the boat headed straight back to wards the ramp....Yikes, I realised that I must have installed the two lines backwards on the help steering pump....right was left and vise versa.....long story short, all of my buddies on the boat got there good laugh! We went out anyway but it sure felt strange having to maintain a mental reminder to turn the opposite way that you wanted to go. Of course, as soon as we got back, I swapped them and rebled and problem fixed. Moral of the story....if you ever disconect your hydralic steering, pay attention to which one goes where...it does make a difference!

I just did the same thing when I replaced my steering last week. I figured it out AFTER I tightened the steering wheel down. Had a heck of a time getting the wheel back off. :(

well I guess I never even tought about it...only two hydralic lines going to the pump. 50% chance of getting the right...my glass must have been half empty that day....

I have done this too, hooked up a steering cable backwards and it is really really weird, had a heck of a time getting it on the tailer.

Don't try that with an airplane either. That's what happened to Aristotle Onassis' son on take-off back in 1973.

"it was established from the very beginning that a crucial mistake had been made during the overhaul of the Piaggio when two ailerons - small panels at the edge of each wing *were replaced the wrong way round. Effectively, this means that when the pilot expects to turn left, he actually turns right. And when he banks the plane after take-off and it goes the wrong way, it is natural for him to turn it even further the wrong way to try to compensate if he doesn't realise that the controls have been switched. This is exactly what happened and it caused the crash."

It's also not at all uncommon to install rack steering upside down and have this same result.

A friend had that problem last year with his outdrive trim out/in lines. He didn't notice because the drives wer down and he only went forward. In this case, the force from the prop pushed the drives in. He noticed when he went to back into his slip and as soon as he went into reverse the force of the prop in reverse raised the drives all the way out. Then of course, once the drive was out, the hydrualics locked it out because they were reversed, so when he went back onto FWD it stayed out. He was lucky it was only one of two drives, but he still had quite a time docking in a cross wind with a twin with only teh Stbd drive working.

Had to do that intentionally to accommodate my through transom steering. Fortunately, I discovered the "hitch" in the garage and not on the lake ... otherwise, I woulda' been posting this story!

I had something similar happen with a 800 OMC, put a shift cable for a power assist shift in a full mechanical shift leg, it swaps forward and reverse. Kind of a suprise when we went to leave the dock. We went out anyway and made the best of it, by the end of the day I was just about used to it.
