What are your thought on throwing a wake in the ICW? Some parts are pretty remote and it does not matter some parts are designated as no wake zones by the USCG which should always be obayed. What confuses me is the marina that puts up a no wake zone sine in front of it or the rich dude putting up a sign in front of his private dock. What makes a legal no wake zone? Is it just USCG markings or any no wake sign?

A marina has a no wake zone in sc that is only there during peak seasons but it is almost a mile long but they will bust you for throwing a wake in it.

It was explained to me that if there is gas being transferred to a boat at a dock and your wake causes the transfer process to be interrupted, resulting in a fuel spill, you are responsible for the cleanup costs. So, a homemade sign can't be enforced, but if you cause a spill when someone is filling up, it is your baby ...

not sure that is 100% correct, but that was what I was told ...

Who is going to "bust" you?

In FL at least, if the sign is legit. It will list the statute# at the bottom. If it doesn't then legally it has no significance. Just blustering by the marina or rich dude or manatee lover.

Are you talking where you put in at Jakes Landing on Murray? Its bad there.....

Regarding the OP's question...Reference ......

Homeowners and others who choose to display the No Wake signs may only display them in areas legally designated as No Wake Zones. Signs may not be posted in areas not currently designated as legal No Wake Zones and will be removed by lake law enforcement officers if signs are illegally displayed.

Enforcement of No Wake Zones is limited to those areas that have been established by federal and state rulemaking or legislation and that are properly marked. No Wake Zones must display regulatory signs or buoys that conform to the standards of the U.S. Aids to Navigation (ATONS). A No Wake marker that does not conform to US ATONS standards or that has been placed in public trust waters without authorization is subject to removal. An unmarked No Wake Zone is not enforceable.

In South Carolina, the regulation is "no wake" in any area marked by official South Carolina Department of Natural Resources buoys or signs or within 50 feet of a moored or anchored boat, wharf, pier, dock or person in the water. All regulations also apply to personal watercraft.

I read the above paragraph to mean that if I own a house on the water and my boat is anchored or moored, then there is a 50 foot LAWFUL no wake zone around that buffer and I am allowed to place signage indicating the no wake zone in that buffer.

[h=3]No Wake Zones in Federally Maintained Waters[/h]
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission does not have statutory authority to establish No Wake Zones within Federal waters such as the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AIWW). The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) maintains the AIWW with Federal funds in support of interstate commercial navigation traffic. With rare exceptions USACE does not concur with establishment of No Wake Zones along the open reaches of the AIWW. No Wake Zone signage placed on private property along the AIWW, and without the concurrence of USACE does not mark a legitimate No Wake Zone and is not enforceable. For questions about No Wake Zones in Federal waters please contact the USACE Wilmington District at http://www.usace.army.mil/.

I'm referring to the isle of palms marina in charleston. But that is also a bad one. And to the other poster about who will bust you, the scdnr sits near that no wake zone a lot trying to catch people.
