VX 110 - compression

Hello, I previously posted about WOT issues on my VX 110Deluxe. It was suggested to first check the air filter for oil and then if the oil was overfilled.

I did both and sure enough found the air filter oily and oil overfilled. Fixed that, took it out on the water, but same result. WOuldn't go above 5000RPM or 20MPH. At this point, I give up and take it to a repair shop.

Get the call today that #2 cylinder is only 30 while others are at 130. Poor compression.

Here are my questions...

(1) Is this common?

(2) What preventative maintenance could be done? It only has 30 hours on it.

(3) Does this mean that irrepairable damage has been done?

Any insight is appreciated!!!!

Re: VX 110 - compression

on a 4 stroke it is probably a bent valve,, sometimes they stick open and the piston hits them,, it is best to always warm up the engine and let it idle for a few minutes before hammering the throttle when you first put it in the water each time you take it out

Re: VX 110 - compression

Local marine mechanic that I took it to did a compression test (2x). cyl 1, 3 & 4 max out at 210lb and 2 & 170lb. Took the cover off and saw nothing wrong with the valves. Suggested I take it to Yamaha mechanic because they have the diagnostic computer. He believes its a piston.

Based on the information provided, would you guys concur? If not, what else could be issue.

Re: VX 110 - compression

well I have honestly never tested one,, my 4 stroke sea doo goes close to 180 but 210 seems like a pretty high compression, and even with one at 170 it should run pretty well. and I would still suspect a valve.

Re: VX 110 - compression

It's fixed. :D He replaced the spark plugs. The #2 cylinder apparently wasn't firing right. He told me the reason.... I can't recall the specifics. But in essence, since I had oil in the air filter (which I replaced) it must've fouled up the plug and then on down to the cylinder. He placed all plugs and the thing fired up right away.

Jeff, I should've listened (remembered) to you to begin with. You suggested changing the plugs and the filter. In the end, it was the right diagnosis.

I now chalk this up to a newbie learning experience.

Thanks.

i know, those things have crazy PSI and they only run 87. I think something is wrong there on that one
the 2 i had to replace the motors where blown #3, with water in them
they both overheated, and i m thinking it is the 87 gas
no obstruction or any thing on the ski water cooling

Re: VX 110 - compression

the most common issues is the spark plugs,, people are going to iridium plugs to fix that and the issues with reading the oil dip stick correctly to avoid overfilling the sump, as it will wet down the air filter element and mess up the performance of the engine. as for the octane of the fuel it is adjusted for in the computer and the timing adjusted,, also a knock sensor will retard the timing. those 110 engines are supposed to be the best for fuel economy,,
