Vro?

I posted a question but really confused everyone...sorry. I will try again.
I have a 1985 Evinrude 50hp. I don't know what VRO is and why or how you would bypass it.

The second question is: I purchased the motor and it came with a new gas tank with a hose and bulb. There are quick disconnects on both ends. The motor has a quick disconnect on it and a line going to what appears to be a plastic factory tank...do both of these need to be hooked up and what is the factory tank for? Can I disconnect it if I have a new can hooked up?

Thanks
Dale

Re: Vro?

You should be able to just run off of one tank. If you are going to bypass the VRo then you could just premix yourself in the primary fuel tank. I have a few friends with older pre-1994 motors that have chosen to bypass the VRO, and they just premix the oil with their fuel when they fill up. It saves you the headache of wondering if your VRO is working in an older engine, and you always have the peace of mind that the oil is at the right ratio. The newer replacement 'VRO' units aren't a 'Variable Ratio Oiler' at all, but rather a constant 50:1 mixer or what they call a fuel / oil mixing unit. They did away with the replacement VRO units that run different mixes at different engine performance intervals.

Re: Vro?

Are you saying that if I replace my 1989 model VRO pump with a new replacement VRO pump that it will not meter the oil for varying RPM? Do you have a source of info on that?

Re: Vro?

The "factory" tank you mention -- is it white with a black top with a hose that runs to the engine? If so. thats the oil tank into which you add TCW3 outboard oil. The VRO draws oil from that tank and mixes it with fuel inside the VRO pump and delivers it to the carbs. If you bypass the oil injection (VRO) part of the system you must premix oil and fuel and cap the oil line from that tank. If you are replacing the VRO pump with the upgraded version, the new pump is indeed a 50:1 premix device and not a true VRO. Makes no difference to the engine however.
