VRO Testing, Pulse Limiter

I have been having trouble with my wot on a 1985 Johnson 150 thinking it might be something with the VRO...

I installed a pulse limiter as recommended by some of the articles mentioned on this forum. Does the blue face go towards the VRO?

The pulse limiter I installed had a nipple on each side. When I installed it, my new hose section got a little squished, not a lot. Is that going to be a big deal?

I hooked up a clear vinyl hose to the output of the VRO with a pressure gauge to monitor the performance of the pump. The OMC service manual stated that I would see the oil injected into the gas. I could not identify any signs of oil going into the gas. Would I be able to see that at the 150:1 when idling?

The pressure was about 4 psi then gradually dropped to about 2 psi when the pump clicked (oil injected?) then dropped to zero. This was at idle speed of around 1800 rpm on muffs. Then back up to 4 psi. Even though this was at idle speed does it sound correct?

While playing with the VRO my idle speed dropped to 1000 rpm. I lost spark on one side of the V-6. I tapped on the power pack and vroom, all were firing again. Another tap and lost them. I have a new power pack on order. I hope this is my problem with the wot bogging.

Any help with the above questions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey lowbud.....

Blue faces the pump.

Just how old is the pump? Is there 3 wires in the harness or four?

Best way to determine if the pump is working (putting oil in the gas) is to mix your fuel tank(s) at 50:1 and put marks on the oil tank. Run a tank of premix and see if the level in the reservoir has dropped....(hash marks on the oil tank).

The pump should not mix anything below 50:1....150:1 don't exist......typo?

The oil consumption test, that is described in the service manual, says to use a 1/4" clear hose at the oil inlet fitting and fill it with oil. Then mark off 1" increments with a Magic Marker. Run the motor and you will see the oil level drop when the pump pulses. The specs are in the factory manual.

The amount of oil per pulse will vary with rpm and throttle setting.

Re: VRO Testing, Pulse Limiter

Thanks for the info. Okay, I installed the blue side to the pump. I thought at idle the fuel to oil ratio was 150:1 to prevent fouling the plugs at low rpm.

I totally forgot about that clear hose test on the oil side. I must of got distracted when the power pack acted up. That test should do the trick. I normally add oil to the reservoir every year so it has to go somewhere but that test will tell me if in the right amounts.
