I have a late 1980's Johnson 70 with the VRO oil system. It is in good order, and what I would like to know is if I should continue to use the oil system or should I mix the gas? If I continue to use it is there anything I can do to ensure that it will keep working? I don't want the sound of the engine siezing up to alert me to a problem with the oiling system. Thank you.

Re: VRO system

There is nothing you can do to make a piece of machinery perfect, or never fail. Nothing, Stllrng. VRO is convenient and saves oil as long as it works. Yours has obviously been working for a while.

Premix is bulletproof. As long as you have fuel, you have lubrication. It would use more oil, smell worse, pollute more.

You makes your choice and takes your chances.

I prefer premix, except when the oil is injected into the crankcase, rather than mixed with the gas. Then I would stay with the injected oil.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)
