VRO System

I just bought a boat with a VRO system (1988 110 HP Evnirude). I am not familiar with these at all. I've heard good stories and bad. I've asked a question about it before on here, but I'm still curious about something. I know there is suppose to be an alarm system on it to warn you if it quits working or if you get low on oil. I was told it's probably tied into the ignition system so the same sound you get when you turn the key is the same sound used for the VRO alarm. The thing is, my ignition switch doesn't make a sound when it's turned. Is there a way to check this system to make sure the alarm is working without running it dry or waiting to see if it's working correctly. Where do I start in tracing down this so called alarm?

2 different warning horns on evinrude control boxes. One will beep when you turn the key on one won't. The only way to test the VRO alarm is connect the motor to a 50-1 tank and disconnect the oil line from the pump and wait for the beep. How many wires does your pump have coming out of it.

The VRO alarms are as follows.

1 beep every second or 2 is the no flow alarm.
1 beep every 20-30 seconds is low oil.
Solid beep is an overheat alarm.

Thanks Flyingscott. To be honest, I haven't really looked at it that closely. You see, I just bought the boat and when I took it out for the first time, it dropped a cylinder. So I'm in the process now of acquiring the parts to rebuild it. I'll look tomorrow and see how many wires are coming out. To be honest, I have heard no beeps of any kind what little I as able to run it before the cylinder dropped.

Hi Flyingscott. I finally remembered to look at that VRO pump and it has one flat wire with two leads coming out of it. At least that's all I can see.....

Follow the wiring harness out of the pump to where it plugs in the black plug will tell you how many wires your pump has. Your pump should have at least 3 wires and hopefully 4.
