I bought a boat with a 150 johnson (87). the vro pump had been removed and an inline elec. fuel pump installed. It runs great hooked up to the water hose, but I have some work to do on the boat before I can take it to the lake. Is the elec. pump going to work or do I need to put a pressure regulator behind it. I think it is 10psi.Is there anything else that I need to do besides keep the oil resevoir about half full?

Electric fuel pump on an outboard motor is not a good idea. I'd replace it with a pulse type pump that were used on premix motors.

If the VRO pump has been removed, why do you need or have an oil resevoir?

I second Aerocook's advice. Look on the maxrules web site for pulse fuel pump for your motor.

An electric fuel pump on an outboard is a big safety problem.

For your anything else question ,I hope your adding 2 cycle oil to your fuel @ 50 to 1 ratio because the oil resevoir is no longer providing oil to your engine. It just didn't sound like you were when you said " besides keeping your resevoir half full." good luck

Ok, this is just theory... how about hooking up a second rectifier which is not connected to positive side of battery, use this to power the electric fuel pump. Would this overload the stator? just a cool idea in theory

No! it is not a theory. It is a dream. Listen to what the fellows are telling you.

A normal mechanical-type factory fuel pump should pump up to about 2.5 lbs at 4500 rpm's. An unregulated 10 lb pump is a big problem.
The advice given you thus far is solid.

The proper circuit design to operate that elec pump, only when cranking the motor or the motor is running, is a bit complex. Somehow my '98 Johnny 150HPV6 knows when the motor is running, but I never figured out how they do that. Likely off the tach signal. If you could run a relay with the tach signal, and the relay energizes the fuel pump, and you can connect the relay to the starting circuit as well, it may work.

A dream?...I beg to differ. It has been done. Years ago I personally had an electric inline fuel pump on an old 70 hp johnson with no problems, no fires, no one got hurt. I however didnt know at the time it was a safety hazzard.

Theory meaning how it could be done. And safety is the biggest concern. But it could be done.....doesnt mean it should be. I personally could easily remember to turn off the key.

Fuel regulator could take care of pressure?. Ive seen electric fuel pumps that max out at 4psi apx $50

Of course I agree...By time you spend $, your time, refill your fire extinguisher... might as well buy the right part that is proven to work, and is safe.

What's this about keeping the resevoir half full?

Why. If the VRO is removed, it no longer takes oil from it.

As said above, you must then pre-mix.

Just thought that the low oil alarm would go off. After a little more research, found that once you unplug the 4 wire harness it won't go off . Will that affect the temp sensors?

Disconnecting the oil tank sensor will not affect your other sensors.
