Got an 89 VRO 110 V4. Has been converted by previous owner to pre mix but the VRO pump is still conected but plugged off. My problem now is when I pump the fuel line bubble fuel sprays out all around VRO pump. Looks like a new VRO pump is pretty pricey, is there any other alternatives like replacing with a regular fuel pump???

Yes just remove it, taking note of the fuel line arrangement and you can buy a regular pump to fit on the engine and replumb. Takes about an hour or so to get all the lines back in place. Also a good time to check the smaller enriching hoses and re-circ lines too. Don't forget an inline fuel filter.

I don't believe you will find a non vro fuel pump for that year engine, unless you go back to a 1984 or 86 fuel pump only, because everything "after" 1986 [ I believe ] is vro.

OK, If I just remove the VRO and connect a fuel pump up, what do I do with the pulse limiter? Do I need to plug it???? All the replacement pumps only have an inlet and outlet

You have to connect the pulse line to the new fuel pump, the pulse hose is what provides the power to make the pump function, the pulse limiter should be taken off, cleaned with a spray solvent and then re-installed in-line. There are 3 ports to the simple fuel pumps : fuel in, fuel out , and pulse.

where the pluse limiter is now, ,take it out an plug the hole, right above this is where the fuel pump mounts, there are 2 small threaded holes and a 3rd hole between these. There is a hole on the back of the fuel pump that will go over the larger hole, this provides the pulse for the fuel pump. The 2 line fuel pump does not need the pulse limiter......

Re: VRO Pump Leaking Badly!

OK, almostconfused now,,,Johnson89, what year and size engine is yours, looks like you have mounted your fuel pump differently than i've seen others who have done this...In essence it looks as if your pump is mounted right over the spot that the pulse limiter was located?.......so my question is, did you remove the pulse limiter and plug the hole???? Or if I mount the fuel pump up on a bracket where the VRO once was,,, then does that need the hose comming from the pulse limiter??? ....I may take this job to a mechanic anyhow, i'm just trying to see what all is involved, boat has sat up over a year and I'm going to have mechanic go through the carbs and do a water pump and foot service at the same time.

Re: VRO Pump Leaking Badly!

Tom,
you can purchase Bombardier part# 0438559 (std. fuel pump) . Utilize the VRO bracket by cutting and placing a small piece of aluminum roof flashing over the surface of the open area in the VRO bracket( where the VRO pump used to be) and mount that smaller pump to that flat surface (use small s/s bolts or screws). Attach a new piece of hose(fuel line will do) from the pulse limiter to the pulse fitting on that new pump. The other 2 fittings on the pump are fuel-in and fuel-out. Utilize tie wraps on all the hose couplings.

I did this a year ago with a 3cyl Johnson, now runs like a champ.

**
You need to start by dismounting the VRO bracket. Take the VRO pump off and discard. Cut the piece of aluminum flashing to make a plate that covers the gap in the VRO bracket. Affix that with screws. Mount the new fuel pump to that roof flashing, point it with fittings either down or up, however it accomodates running the fuel lines to where they need to go ( your 110hp is somewhat different than my 3cyl.) You can get several feet of new fuel hose from NAPA, etc. and that will work fine. Re-mount the VRO bracket where it came from(with new Bomb fuel pump attached) and then route new fuel lines to where they need to go. It took me 2 hours, but works great.

You're aware that the gas side of the VRO pump can be rebuilt? See Max Rules website for more info.

Thanks for that info, but the housing itself is cracked. I believe I'm going to the standard fuel pump.

Sorry for all the questions in my previous post, I reread this one and went out and looked at my engine and I see what your talking about, except the 3rd hole your talking about has a bolt in it now, so I assume that comes out for the new fuel pump?.......BTW, What size and year is your engine???

This one is a different part number than the one Johnson89 had used I believe, the difference is his has the hole in the back that must be mounted to the block, thus not required to have a pulse limiter.....this part number would require the pulse limiter to still be used.....I don't which would be a better pump? These are some thirsty engines and need a good supply....

Re: VRO Pump Leaking Badly!

Tom,
that fuel pump part # that I gave you is supposed to work for 2cyl. 50 hp up to a V-4 OMC engine, that's what the dealer told me. They said they had sold many for just this sort of VRO substitution. I'm sure any Evinrude dealer with an experienced parts man could advise you on that. That pump is the type that does not mount to the block, that's why I described how to modify the old VRO bracket so that you could mount it on the VRO bracket itself ( after you remove the VRO from it).

You could have the dealer look up the pump part# that goes with the old 88hp Evinrude Spcl. of approx. 12+ years ago ( that engine was basically a cheaper priced 90 v-4 that came from the factory without a VRO system). If the dealer has been around awhile, he'll know what to look up.

Re: VRO Pump Leaking Badly!

yes right above the pule limiter there is a screw(pic) that comes out and the back of the fuel goes over that hole....I have a 1989 90hp...I checked with a mechanic an was told this pump will handle up to a 140....If you have a 2 line pump this is for not using the pule limiter, if you have the 3 line then you need the pule limiter...Sorry I don't have a pic of the back of the fuel pump..Pic 101001a shows the location of the screw that came out,....if you don't have this screw then you might need the 3 line pump
