VRO Pump...A Necessity?

Hello. I just bought a early 90's (I think) 60hp Johnson. It has oil injection. I'm assuming the oil pump (I think that's called the VRO pump but I'm not sure what it stands for) works but I have heard they can be somewhat undependable. I have two questions. Is there a easy way to find out if the pump is working and is it also alright to bypass the pump and just run 50:1 ratio gas-oil mixture and not even mess with the pump? Any ideas?

This should give you more insight to the pump:

The service manual give tests to run on the pump to test for proper operation and oil flow.
