While doing some work in the back of my boat I accidentally snapped the plastic nipple off the VRO oil primer bulb. The engine is a 1990 Johnson 40hp. Anyone know the part number for a replacement bulb?

I picked up a replacement at my local Johnson dealer. It's not the part number listed above, but the dealer says it's the replacement. My plan is to connect the new bulb, then disconnect the hose at the motor, squeeze the bulb until oil comes out the end, and then shove it on really quick. Is that the right procedure, or is there a better way?

yep, pretty much the right way to do it.

This is a good time to check your No Oil warning horn. To do this:
1. detach oil hose from engine, it would be best to unhook it at the VRO but at the cowl connection will be fine.
2. Run engine on 50:1 pre mix from an auxiliary tank until no oil warning horn sounds. This can take quite a while.
3. Have someone squeeze bulb until oil comes out end of hose.
4. Attach oil line.
5. Continue running engine on premix until warning horn quits. This verifys that pump is still self priming.
6. Mark oil reservoir and run engine on premix until you notice oil level drop in tank.

The Bombardier factory oil primer bulb is part number 5008620. It's still a stock item for Bombardier. It is a special bulb, not similar to the 5/16" or 3/8" gas/fuel bulbs they sell. This is made to handle oil. It is a 1/4" bulb and adapts to the special 1/4" yellow stripe VRO oil hose which Bombardier also sells. The above-mentioned oil primer bulb 0174157 does not supercede to the 620 part number. Hopefully the 5008620 is what they sold you at the dealership. That's what I use on my VRO engine.

One other thing. If you pump it too much you will fill your carbs with oil like I did. Best of luck. Rick.

Pretty sure they sold me the 5/16 fuel bulb. Ordered the 5008620. Thanks all for the help.
