Hello, I have twin Johnsons, (1989 150's vro's) and my questions are regarding the oil tanks. They sit in a closed transom, when looking down at them you see they both have a priming bulb?(which are always hard) Each have a small circular metal plate with a small metal post. Attached to the post are 2 wires that run with the oil hose back towards the motors...What are the wires for? (The boat has twin oil gauges in the console)...Also, where the oil hose is attached to the tank is a small housing and 2 wires...Are the oil pumps in the tanks? How do the pumps work? Suction? If the oil tank wires become disconnected will the vro pump fail? Any advice would be appreciated. Im trying to figure out this system which appears to be factory. Thanks, Homey.

Homey

I think they are for the low oil alarm. When the oil level gets to a certain level the alarm will sound. The vro pumps should be on the engines. They should have one intake for the oil and one for the fuel. The pumps are vacume operated.

Re: VRO oil tanks, questions.

lake runner is correct. The VRO pumps are a dual set-up.One half of the assy. pumps fuel and the other pumps oil.It is an air-motor driven unit via crankcase pressure pulses by way of a hose.
If the wires become inadvertently disconnected from the oil reservoirs it will only disable the low oil alarm. There is a float switch within the oil tank that makes or breaks these two wires.
The fuel and oil are mixed at the discharge section of the VRO pump and then flow to the carburetor inlets. You should place a mark on the outside of the oil reservoirs at the fluid level ocassionally and monitor usage.

Thank you for your replies. So, the wires must be for the low oil alarm and oil level guages on console...What would cause the vro pump to fail? Thanks, Homey.

Dirty fuel , dirty oil, worn out air motor, leaky pulse hose,or just plain wore out. There are rebuild kits available.
