Went in for a tune-up - charged $1K for carburetor rebuild and other engine charges I didn't understand. Put in a fuel filter - I was told I did not have one but now installed. Took it for a trial. The horn sounded once in gear - then finally stopped. Ran great for 10 min at near top throttle. Down throttled to idle then the horn sounded and was not able to re-start. Luckily I had my kicker to get us back.

Marina claims they water tested it for 20-30min and it was fine for them..... Any thought?

Never had a problem with the VRO. I just wanted a tune-up and not a rebuilt- but they never called with an estimate - only to tell me they had six hours invested and it would be $1K.

It did run great for the 10 min -

I have a Evinrude 1989 110 VRO on, let the boat to a mechanic during winter and have it check in, timed, changed cabling. Those mechanics did a very bad job. When running the alarm when crazy "constant beep" meaning overheating. VRO is working and water is coming out, My dad and I notice that the timing of the motor was not done correctly. The screw were not tight correctly. Bad timing can result in overheating. Just putting my 2 cents into your problem. Now timing is not perfect on mine but much better, and that motor is starting the first turn of the key
