Thank you in advance for your valuable comments.

I have a 1994 Johnson 150 that has had the oil side of the VRO disconnected. Now, the fuel side is not working properly (engine starving for fuel & dying when under load). I checked for leaks & didn't find anything. I have been searching for a fuel side repair kit, but with not much luck. Any suggestions from the experts?

You might want to check a couple of things before you start playing with the fuel pump. Does your primer bulb go flat when this occurs? You might have a fuel restriction before the pump. Ie Fuel filters, fuel tank check valve might be stuck. JMHO

The bulb does not go flat, but it does get soft. I replaced the fuel filters & inspected as much of the fuel line as possible.

When the engine is revved and gets the boat on a plane, in less than a minute the engine will start to surge, and then die. But, if I pump the bulb the engine will continue to run without any apparent problems.

At idle, the engine will run, but it will have a "pop" to the exhaust sound. When I pump the bulb the popping goes away. I was told that popping sound was due to a lean fuel mixture and an indication of the engine starving for fuel.

I would check the check valve at the tank first. This does not sound like a fuel pump issue. You can rebuild the pump. But more than likely the check valve at the tank. Look for the fitting on the fuel like coming out of the tank that the hose is connected to. Take the fitting off and check the valve to see if it is working properly. More than likely it is sticking. Also you have a screen on the fuel pick up in the tank. Might want to pull that and check to see if it is plugged.

Are you sure that there is no other fuel filters/water seperators inline? Water separators cause a restriction when they have sat for a period of time. The fuel gums up pretty good.

One other thing to look at is all you fuel like connections after the fuel pump. Check the fuel supply fittings from the pump to the carbs, the fuel primer circuit hoses, and the recirculation lines. An air leak any where could do the same. The new fuel eat the line a bit is they are really old. But ethenol does not eat the hoses that much, but might be enough cause an air leak. Or vibration could cause the air leak over time. Just another check.

Just a suggestion, You can also buy an aftermarket VRO pump without the oil side. Maxrules has them.

Sounds like the fuel pump is the problem. To verify, disconnect the outlet hose, make sure the engine can't start (pull the lanyard, etc.), and crank it over. A good pump will deliver strong pulses of fuel. You could put a pressure gauge teed in the pump output line. You should get 3 to 6 psig from a good pump.

Another inspection revealed that the fuel hose going from where the harness connects to the engine and to the engine fuel filter was significantly deteriorated. It was very soft and it looked like the hose "layers" were separating, like the tread coming off a tire. I replaced the hose. I also found that the engine fuel filter may not have been tight. This may have caused an air leak. I snugged-up the fuel filter really good.

I'll be taking the boat out in the bay tomorrow morning to see if the problem is fixed. Wish me luck! I'll give an update when I get back...
