I have a VP 5.0 with an SX-M outdrive on a 205 Four Winns Sundowner. The boat has power steering and I was speaking with the local Four Winns dealer about excessive play in the steering system. After checking everything he recommended for play I found the helm to be at fault. I can turn the wheel about four inches before feeling any tension in the cable. I also verified this at the engine. My dealer has suggested a new Teleflex NFB 4.2 tilt system (the boat has tilt steering from the factory). When reading online about this system Teleflex states not for use with power assisted systems. So my question becomes is VP powers steering a power assisted steering system or are they referring to a system that has hydraulics at the helm. My current set up has a geared helm with a cable leading to the engine compartment where it attaches to the power steering.

Any advice is appreciated.

P.S. the boat is a 2002

Re: VP Power Steering

use the standard QC setup.
carefully inspect the tilt mechanism,we find a lot of loose ones that are excessivly worn at the tilt joint.
using a no feed back system can lead to issues with the power steering acuator.
it must float.
you have a power steering pump that supplies hydraulc pressure to an acuator that is actuated by the steering cable.

Re: VP Power Steering

Thanks for the reply "rodbolt", I'm going to ask the dealer about this. This is the exact reason I went throught the local OEM so I could avoid any confusion on replacement parts.
