VP engine swap - ford to gm block

All,

I need some smart help. My wife said to research a new boat motor swapping from ford to chevy based block. I know everything would have to change on the engine itself.

I have a 1996 Osprey Fisherman 22' glass cuddy. The boat came with a VP 5.0 FL PHUR motor. As ford quit making marine engines manifolds and risers are quite spendy, as are other parts compared to the gm block market. I have a 290 DP-C1 out drive with 1.95 gearing. I know I will have to reprop. Manifolds and risers are center rise, believe the risers are same as some of the gm motors use.

Would I have to regear or replace my Outdrive if I wanted to put in, say, a 5.7 gi or gxi in replacement? I know I would have to reprop. Would the exhaust pipe work with a gm motor or would that have to be replaced as well? I know motor mounts would move. What about coupler etc? Thanks for the help!

What you are trying to do, will be so expensive, it won't be worth the effort.
What is wrong with the 5.0 engine?

The existing engine needs manifolds and risers and my wife desires the maintenance parts to be more easily sourced. Last year, the fuel pump and no one up in Alaska had one, soon had to be ordered. It isnt that the ford motor isn't running ok, it's the parts availibity issue. No one up here stocks pretty much anything for them but if you've got a gm based motor, you can get parts easily.

Compare the prices of the risers and manifolds, with the price of a fully dressed 5.7 Gi, include the cost of a new flywheel cover that has the primary shaft in it. You can buy a lot of manifolds, risers, raw water pumps and other items for what a new engine costs.
That flywheel cover alone, without shaft, bearings, seals, etc is $650
You will need everything in this link.
