Can anyone recommend a pump for quart gear lube containers that will actually fit the drain plug on a duo-prop (the drain hole behind the props)? I have 2, one is too big diameter to fit back into the hole, the other is smaller, but the threads are too short, since the threads in the hole are recessed.

What do other people use? My dealer doesn't carry anything, and said that they had to fab. their own. VP sure makes this difficult, first making you pull the props, then finding something to fit the drain plug hole.

Thanks!
Craig

Craig, I don't know of anybody that makes one, I think that you will have to use one with the large Oring and hold it tight while someone else pumps it

Isn't the plug still 3/8 course ?What you need is an adapter that is LONG. but 3/8 on both sides.

I can't access the OMC/BRP part number from here, but there is one .Also check a Mercruiser Dealer.Bravo III has the same I beleive.

DHP

if your dealing with the DP-S that has the drain plug inside the bearing carrier just fwd of the prop volvo makes an adapter, its in the service manual. always replace the oring on that model drain plug, it likes to cut itself up.
so its not volvo making anything difficult its daelers and do it yourselfers that refuse to read a service manual.
but as I always fill them from the top I dont use my adapter much.

Well, there's no mention of anything in the owners manual, I have read it (some owners, like me, haven't had a chance to get the full set of service manuals).

Three dealers now have told me there's no such thing as an adapter. Guess you either have good dealers, or some super special secret adapter that Volvo only tells certain dealers about. Sorry, but I get annoyed when getting lumped in as someone who "refuses to read".

Re: VP DP-S Gear lube pump

I bought a little pump from Napa that is labeled a gear oil pump. The nozzle doesnt fit perfectly in the hole but I can hold it in there while I pump and it works fine. Got to be quick putting the plug back in. Don't look for a perfect screw in fitting, go with what works. The pumps are cheap. I'll see if I can post a picture of it here later on today.

Yeah, I found one that will fit if I hold it, just makes it a 2 person job to be able to swap out the empty quart bottles. Was just hoping to find one that fit correctly.

The Volvo adapter for the DP-S drive is 3855932. Runs about 8 bucks.
The Female end will fit on the Merc pump with the 3/8-16 thread, the pump fits a quart bottle.

cw
its cause I did not mention owners manual just service manuals, but see? its there :) .
I would find another dealer if the techs were unaware of the adapter, we had to use it at the DPS school a few years back and it was a test question as well. I just did not have a DPS manual at the house.
I contract a bit for a dealership that would have told you the same thing though, they dont own one and dont know it exists and I wont loan them mine. its the same place that replaced a shift cone in an older DP unit , original cone was steel, replacement cone was a brass, lasted about 10 hours and locked up cause they failed to change to the correct shift shoe. last I looked there were like 7 different cone materials and 2 shoe materials you have to use the correct parts. the lead tech there had no idea, he does now:) :) .
i am sorry if you felt i singled you out, i did not mean to. however I see it all the time. but like I say get a new oring as well cause they like to cut themselves coming out.

It probably had a lot to do with who you talked to. A perfect example is today I asked the parts guy for 3 quarts of Dextron III ATF for the steering system on a new Volvo D-4 260 DPH drive I am installing. He comes back with Volvo's power steering/power trim fluid (which is oil, not ATF) and says here use this, it's for steering! His logic, that's what he uses for his Power steering on his boat and it's Volvo.
For anyone seeing a D4 with a DPH, the steering is unlike anything else out there, but that meant nothing to him, and meant nothing that I ask for ATF, particularly Dextron III, which we have on the shelf.
At dealerships, many times you have to deal with the parts guy behind the counter or a service writer that has even less knowledge many times.
I know our parts guy gives wrong/bad information lots of times. If I happen to hear it, I "Usually" say something.

Re: VP DP-S Gear lube pump

DonS
careful with them pins, I just had to replace the bellows on one, after 3 months two of the pins had locked themselves in the aluminium.
man that drive needs to go on a diet :) :) .
what was funny is the tech rep was going on and on about the installer of the unit and the drive bellows had been installed with the word UP facing down :)

this particular unit seems vary bad for corrosion protection, and those killer spiral shaft splines will give me a headache one day. I can see that comeing.
but I agree with ya on the parts desk sometimes:) its about as bad as some of the salesmens pitches.

Re: VP DP-S Gear lube pump

Thanks again for your help guys! Looks like I need to get off my butt and get the service manuals, rather than relying on the parts guys!
