Hi,

My 2003 VP 5.7Gi-b has what I think is a flame arrestor on top of the engine but doesn't appear to have any air filter. The arrestor looks like a metal air filter but I'm wondering should it have something inside it or should I remove it and place an air filter on it?

Kind Regards,

David.

Ayuh,...

Dust is pretty much Non-existent in the marine environment..

Air Filters aren't used on Boats...

Thanks for the replies - looks like I now have a VP ornament in the form on an air filter! I'm assuming some boats must use air filters then as the filter I have is a genuine VP part.

?????????????
If it's the Volvo OEM part, it is a flame arrestor, boats don't have Air Filters, only flame arrestors.

Part # 3582358 - AIR FILTER INSERT
according to invoice.

That's why I was confused - it's in a Volvo Penta box just the same as the oil filter, fuel filter and plugs I purchased.

Post a picture of it. MANY, MANY times VP reps and I have laughed at the names they give some items. Translation problems between Swedish and English. Commonly known at Volvo as "Swinglish".
The flame arrestors seldom go bad, and can be cleaned with solvent and compresses air to blow them out.

I don't think it has gone bad - it looks pretty clean but due to me being a newbie at boat mechanics (actually, after getting stung by local mechs who have robbed me blind!!) I thought when I did the service, like a car, I'd need plugs, oil and a filter. When I asked the lady in the shop, she asked me if it was the small round or large round filter and when I said small, produced the a filter the same as on this link http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=159044F

When I took the arrestor off, I checked it and it 'seemed' ok - here is a photo - a bit cloudy as I took it with my phone camera.

That's a diesel air filter, not a gas engine flame arrester. It's used on the late model 31, thru 34 and 41 thru 44 diesels.
Take it back the people you bought it from, they don't have a clue.

PS: I edited your post and made your picture just a link. WAY too big.

Thanks Don - I typically resize the photos with XP Image Resizer when taken with normal camera but thought the camera phone size would have snuck through!

Looks like a refund in order then!! Thanks to all for your assistance.

The flame arrester is a USCG safety requirement.
