VP 5.7 EFI Start problem - low idle

Hi,
I've got a 2003 VP engine (SN 4012077084) which is having a starting issue. When I turn the ignition to On, I wait until I hear the fuel pump prime and then an alarm beep sounds which I'm assuming means it's ready to start. I wait a few seconds and then attempt to start the engine but it just winds over. Sometimes when I do this, you hear a cough but it won't start. If I push the throttle forward a little and then attempt to start, it starts with no problems. No delay, no coughing. I'd say it was a low idle problem but the thing is when it's started and I push the throttle back to idle, it'll happily idle - no rough idling and no cut outs.

I'm not sure if it's a related problem but the engine seems to take about 10 to 15 minutes of running before I can get to cruising speed without it sounding like it's missing. Plugs aren't that old and are clean - several tanks of fuel have been put through it and the fuel is fresh so I'm not sure where to look from here. I've searched through the forums here but I can't find anything on EFI engines related to this.

Kind Regards,

David.

i would check the fuel filter(s) and water seperator. or just replace them anyway, as they don't cost much.

Maybe I'm missing something but I can only find a fuel filter on the boat - I can't find a fuel/water separator. When I enquired I was told that this model of engine doesn't have the fuel/water separator built into the filter and that later models did. Does this sound right?

The filter installed on the engine under the pumps IS a water seperating fuel filter. Small, but it is.
Most installers install a primary water seperating fuel filter with the filters that are the size of an oil filter. This keeps the chance of getting water to the EFI system to a minimum.
In case you haven't got them, here are links to the OEM manuals for your engine and drive.

You can also go to the link below and download the maintenance schedule and owners manual.

After all that, now let them tell you that you don't have a water seperating fuel filter.;)

Thanks Don - I've got most of those manuals from you previously and the info on the fuel filter is invaluable! Back to the shop I go. Now I'll change the filter anyway but does the original problem sound filter related or should I be grabbing something else whilst at the Volvo Penta shop?

Being EFI, is this something that if I plugged a diagnostics tool into the computer, I would find out the results?

Don S, first, thanks for those links. When I click on the "download now" button, all I get is a screen saying "Oops, this link appears to be broken" for both the Diagnostic Manual and the Corrections. Any ideas? I would very much appreciate downloading those files. Thanks.
