vovlo 270 outdrive

I am new to the site and to owning a boat.I have a 82 270 out drive and the cable to shift was broken.Before braking out drive worked fine now when i try to put new cable on tryed to shift the gears by hand and it is stuck in gear and wont go to nuteral or reverse can anyone help me with this .

you better retrace your steps.

Did you get the cable secured with the little clamp, #35 in the link?

Have you disconnected the cable at the drive to see if you can shift it by hand?
You should be able to shift it by hand fairly easily.

yes the cable is off and the unit will not shift .Stays in forward gear.And I didnt do any of the work just trying to find the prob I have.Im almost sure I have a bad outdrive .
