What is the difference between the two? Did Volvo Penta do a 5.7 with the Vortec? Sorry for all these dumb questions. I am new to the boating world and so i am learning my mistakes as i go on my engine and boat and what to do and what not to do.

Re: Vortec or Non Vortec

Vortec is a better flowing, better designed head, therefore motors with them have substantially higher HP and torque output compared to non-Vortec. Loosely speaking, all 1996 and later V8's have Vortec heads, and all 1995 and earlier do not have Vortec heads. I'm not sure when the other size engines started using Vortec heads. As always, there are exceptions.

This is generally true for Volvo, Mercruiser, and Chevy/GMC trucks/vans/cars...

For more details, Google search away and learn the history and soforth.

Thanks for the information. So it would be safe to say that my 97 5.7GL engine would be a vortec? Because i can't find information on this.

Nope, that ain't a safe bet, by any means....

Count the number of bolts holding the intake manifold to the heads...
8 is Vortec,...
12 is Not....
