I'm looking at a 1998 Bayliner Tahoe that has a cracked 5.0L, before I buy it i'm just looking at what a replacement engine would cost. After doing some research it sounds like it has the 5.0 Vortec Engine and I would like to replace it with the 5.7 since it sounds like it will bolt right up. Does the 5.7 have to be a vortec?? From rapido marine I was looking at

5.7 ( 350) ENGINE 1987 to 1996
(1 piece rear main seal)

but this motor is not a vortec correct?? Would this still work or not? Any guidance would be appreciated!!

Ayuh,... Correct, it's Not a Vortec...

Everything but the Intake manifold will fit just Fine....

Absolutely true.
But the Vortec 5.7 will have much more power. Mercruiser rates them all differently, but to give you an idea how much more, GM rated that 1987-1995 engine at 210hp and 300lb-ft torque. Then in 1996 when they went to the Vortec heads, it was 255hp and 330lb-ft of torque! So while that engine you list above might sound like a great deal, a Vortec would be better. In fact, the non-Vortec 5.7 might actually have less HP than the Vortec 5.0 you want to replace. Good luck.

Is your existing intake manifold still in good condition? If so, get the "vortec" engine. The intakes are not interchangable between vortec and nonvortec.
