Volvo water pick up?

I run through hull exhaust and the water pick up is in the bottom of the boat (raw water pump is mounted on the motor). So the water pick up, raw water pump and anything to do with exhaust has nothing to do with the outdrive but yet I still have these intakes on the front of the drive. Should I close then off?

The idea came to me when I looked at this old Monza that has the same set up.

It's not necessary to close them off, but you could if you wanted to.
The way the water tube is made, it won't even help with drive cooling,

Thats a nose cone on that boat.It's added later and covers up the holes.
It's less drag on the drive and makes it faster.Jerry
