Looking to buy new 20ft bowrider, choices are a volvo or mercruiser engines. To be used in salt and fresh water along the Gulf. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to iboats. :)

Bothe are fine choices. I really have no preference for one over the other, but MerCruiser is handled by more service shops than VP. It could be the other way around in your neighborhood. Check the Yellow Pages.

Pat,
I have owned both and either choice would serve you well. Merc has had some recent issues with corrosion problems in salt water - with the Bravo III drives. Volvo has an unblemished reputation - but service and cost of parts maybe a issue in your area. Check around before buying.

My personal preference is Volvo, but I have experienced no problems in getting either parts or service for my drives in the Port Clinton OH area. If you intend in leaving your boat in the water, you may want to look at the "composite" stern drives that Volvo offers for saltwater applications.

Re: volvo vs mercruiser

For me, in the lower bhp ratings (140 - 320) I like the Volvo and the higher ratings I like the Mercruisers. I am not a fan of the Alpha although the latest iteration with the better shifting is probably close. The clutches in the Volvo's and Merc Bravos are simply better. The dealer thing, as Willy has noted, is probably the biggest issue.

Go with closed cooling (CC or FWC) for salt. Yes, you can make the raw water systems live, but I'd still want closed if it were me.
